Tesco Group help people who affecting by FLOODS in Somerset. According to a worker who
worked for Tesco thirteen years Sara, the floods had an extremely severe effect
on local people in some of the area. Many people’s homes were flooded, as well
as farmer’s fields and town centres.
“My
colleagues and I wanted to do everything we could to help. It all started with
a big fundraising effort we held at our store. We were overwhelmed by the
generosity of our customers, and we managed to raise over £4000 in just
one week – surpassing all previous collections we have taken part in” said by
Sara. Across the area £107,000 was raised for the Somerset Flood Fund,
which Tesco matched with an extra £10,000. Tesco Group not only giving money as
fund but also organized an event which named Tesco ‘Big Clean Up’ to encourage
their worker to help the victims in Somerset. Tesco workers donated their 5,000
hours to help clean up places that had been badly hit. After that,
Tesco workers also visited the center of Taunton to collect rubbish. They
collected eight bags of rubbish, which was much appreciated by local
people. Tesco workers collected over twenty bags full of rubbish on Chesil
Beach.
“But
we felt we could do more to help the families that were worst affected, some of
whom we knew had lost everything they owned” said by Sara and her colleagues.
So they had an idea which is donating items to families, to replace the
important things they had lost.

In October 2013, Tesco Group took part
in an event named “Fighting Hunger, Tackling food waste”. The United Nations
World Food Day acts as a timely reminder that poverty and hunger are problems
the world over, impacting millions of people each day. It also gives us an
opportunity to highlight the issue of hunger on our doorstep, where 5.8 million
people live in deep poverty in the UK, meaning they struggle to afford everyday
essentials, like food.
In this event, Tesco responsible to
redistribute surplus food to hundreds of charities up and down the country,
including homeless shelters, soup kitchens, breakfast clubs for children and
women’s refuge centers. These charities offer not only a meal, but invaluable
support to some of the poorest people in our society. According to Tesco worker
Lindsay Boswell, Tesco redistribute surplus food which has lost its commercial
outlet but is still perfectly fine to eat. This is good quality, nutritious
food that is still in date but would have otherwise gone to waste. It can be
considered as overproduction, damaged packaging and labelling errors. The
reason why Tesco will be in charge of food is because Tesco have over 18 years
of experience in food industry, they believed that Tesco will have good
solutions to handle them.
